Initial Designs –
Packaging/Costing/Markets
Photographs taken be Sam Ellis 31/07/16
The photographs above show the intended packaging to be used
at the point of sale. The jet jewellery sits on a green ribbed piece of card
cut to fit within the plastic sleeve.
The plastic sleeves cost 2p, with each piece of card costing
10p when cut from a full sheet, purchased from Staple’s.
I chose the deep green card as I thought it complimented the
black colour of the jet jewellery.
I have also added my marketing name ( New Inception
Jewellery) and logo . I am currently
building a website “newinceptionart.com”, where in the future I could sell
products I have made. I believe it is important to create a brand, to help give
your product market awareness.
I believe the packaging looks good quality, aesthetically
looks pleasing to the eye and promotes the jet jewellery, protects the product
and is suitable to help sell and deliver the jewellery via the MMU Originals
Online Shop.
The raw material costs are as follows:
Jet is free material
10 inch sterling silver 925 finish chain £7.82 (possibility
of sourcing cheaper chains in the future)
2p plastic sleeve
10p ribbed card
Labour costs £10.00 (1 hr, albeit needs to be refined)
Total cost to make approx £17.94
Target retail cost would be £28.00….giving an approx 40%
margin.
These costing will need to be refined but it was important I
achieved a competitive price within the £30.00 region to attract the younger
generation. The typical price for jet jewellery is £50.00 to £90.00; however
these are to a high super gloss finish, complimented with fine silver,
achieving an extremely high quality. I am aiming at a different more casual
every day wear market. The smooth, matt finish suits the younger female
audience.
During the process I have designed and created a family of
products and having initially shown close family and friends the jewellery I
was given favourable feedback.
I have tested this jewellery and the other designs I made in
the market, showing the jewellery to x2 craft shops in Robin Hoods Bay, “Swell”
and “Wave”. Both were interested with Swell offering to buy x1 pendant for
£20.00 and Wave giving me some useful tips in attaching the chain to the jet.
They liked the idea in making the jewellery look more rustic/natural and that I
were aiming at a younger female audience. They suggested designing wilder,
natural shapes and not trying to make the design look uniform.
I did take my jewellery to x2 Jet shops In Whitby, “W Hammonds”
and “One O Five”, however they were not particularly interested as they offered
more sophisticated and expensive jet jewellery aiming at an older audience.
I also visited x2 shops in Leeds, H Samuel (typical high
street jewellers) and Azendi (high end jewellery specialists), neither were interested,
advising the product did not suit their jewellery range.
Through visiting the jewellery retailers it was apparent
that my jewellery would not suit the typical high end jet retailer, high end
jewellers or a typical high street jeweller. I was encouraged by the interest
from the craft/ gallery shops, which I believe showed promise and was the ideal
way to market.
The feedback suggests, if I work with the designs, making
them interesting and natural and keep the retail cost competitive then I could
per sue this jewellery further. Both Swell and Wave thought the MMU Originals
would be a good site to sell the jewellery.
