Initial Designs – Reflection

The finished initial designs as shown above have helped me understand the jet material in how it can look to how it can be manipulated. I believe I have initially made functional pieces of jewellery, made to a good standard to be sold to the audience.

The intention is now to work with the jet further creating new pendants to a more demanding shape and using a different hook system. The chain attachment does work, but I thought it was important to research and try different methods.

I have targeted a 25+ female audience and believe the designs suit this market. Feedback from the audience has been positive, particularly the craft/gallery shops. The high end/high street jeweller’s were not interested. The target sales price is £15.00 - £30.00 dependent on size and design of the jet, with the materials cost (£17.94) taken into account gives an approx 40% margin. Raw material costs need to be scrutinized to effect savings.

I am happy with the packaging, being functional and aesthetically pleasing and intend to use this with the further jewellery designed. I will continue to use the brand “New Inception Jewellery”, as I can create a brand for future business.

The make process is relatively quick, and uncomplicated; with the main issue being the jet is brittle and can shatter during the drilling process. Choosing the best piece of jet to work with is important in reducing the make time.

Generally the initial design has been a success, the intention now is to design and make further pieces showing development of my ideas.
